I was diagnosed with severe PTSD and began the search for a service dog.
Little did I know that most organizations that provide these dogs have a 2 - 5 year wait list, and most would not even put rne on the Iist.
The organizations that would put me on their list would require that I re-locate to another state for about a year.
As a mother of four children, this was not financially feasible.
I did more research and found I could train my own dog, since it was impossible to get one otherwise.
I had trained many animals previously, including hunting dogs, so I began my hunt for a puppy to train. The breeders I talked to were very helpful in helping me decide the breed and temperament needed for the job.
Poppy is my Doberman Pincher service dog that changed my life. Now, I train dogs for veterans in the hope that it will change their lives too. Poppy helps me train each new puppy and is a great role model and mentor,
PIease help us to pay it forward so other veterans can find freedom from PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injuries.

This guide is designed to help U.S. veterans and their families navigate the resources available to them to get their finances under control and to save for retirement.

This program is free to veterans who struggle with alcohol and drug abuse, called Contingency Management (CM).
CM is a method currently employed by the VA and has statistically proven effective in fighting addiction for veterans. This resource would be excellent for veterans who may be struggling with substance abuse.

In 2018, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development gave 87,000 vouchers to help veterans find permanent housing
HUD-VASH provides veterans who are homeless with rental assistance vouchers for privately-owned housing
SSVF helps find affordable housing options for veterans through various non-profits and grantees
After their hard work and sacrifice while serving the U.S., veterans return home in need of housing and assistance to re-enter into civilian life once again. There are different veteran housing assistance programs to help them find affordable permanent housing.
U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) estimates that 40,056 veterans are homeless on any given night. And just in 2018, HUD has allocated more than 87,000 vouchers to help veterans find permanent housing across the U.S.
Another report showed that rental assistance programs, like public housing and section 8, has helped more than 340,000 low-income veterans, reducing homelessness within the group by 33 percent.

When returning from active duty and transitioning to civilian life, one of the first things a soldier must do is find a job. While military service provides many critical skills that can translate well into civilian jobs, sometimes the transition itself and communicating those skills to a non-military hiring manager is a big challenge to overcome.
Sadly, for many veterans, this can be a battle, even after fighting for our country for years. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate of veterans is dropping, declining from 4.3 percent to 3.7 percent in 2017. However, of those veterans who are unemployed, 59 percent are between the ages of 25 and 54, which indicates the working-age veterans are the ones having the biggest problem finding work. Also, even younger veterans, those between the ages of 18 and 25, continue to have a hard time both finding and keeping a job.
That may sound like poor statistics, but the truth is that programs assisting both veterans and employers are helping to make a difference. The key is to help veterans connect with those programs so they can find the training they need and the available jobs that are hiring people with their skill sets.
Also, some jobs are perfectly suited for members of the military. All it takes is a little knowledge about how to translate military skills to the civilian workforce and find jobs that build on your skills. This guide is designed to help today’s veterans overcome the challenge of finding a job, translate their abilities into marketable skills, and land a civilian job where they can thrive.

Hi Jim,
GPS is working with the Bay Area Workforce Development Board to pilot a work-based paid training program in Brown County for individuals facing barriers to employment that may be interested in a career in manufacturing.
Recently separated veterans may qualify for funding that can be used for this training. Please see our entry on the state's website and let me know if you have anybody that you think might qualify and be interested.

Giving America's Heroes the Support They Deserve
Returning to civilian life after a successful career in the military is not always the smooth transition veterans imagine it will be. Veterans return to their hometowns only to find that their jobs are no longer waiting for them, or their service-related injuries or trauma make it impossible to hold a steady job. This can create a spiral of problems, making it challenging to thrive. Through no fault of their own, many veterans find themselves without a place to live, even after dedicating part of their lives to serve their country.

Unfortunately, in the United States there appears to be a disconnection between what veterans deserve to receive, and what civilian life is really like for them.
